Sarasota, FL – Thanks to a donation by Sam Schneider, CEO/President from Vista System – "We Do It Your Way Finding"- in Sarasota, Florida, The GAP School is able to offer its Friday Arts Academies. The premise of the weekly program is based on the research of the Multiple Intelligences Theory formulated by Dr. Howard Gardner, the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
According to Gardner’s earlier research there are seven intelligences: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Musical, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Spatial, Interpersonal, and Intrapersonal. Each of these intelligences are given the chance to flourish in the Friday Arts Academies at The GAP SCHOOL and lead by community experts.
Annette Breazelle, a veteran art teacher who helped established the Sarasota School of Arts and Science Art program, leads our Arts Academy. The focus is on the basics of drawing, cartooning, and using color. This academy is a full year academy. This academy emphasizes spatial intelligence as defined by Dr. Gardner. One of the final outcomes of this academy was the Art Show that was displayed at The Sarasota Bay Club from July 1-September 2nd. The September Art Gallery can be seen at the Rosemary Birthing Center. In October, the Gallery will travel to Sarasota Memorial Healthplex on Clark Road.
Students also attend the Food Academy at Fix-N-Freeze, located near The GAP School on Approach Road in the Sunrise Plaza. This academy teaches how to create a meal for their family to eat on Friday nights. The learning opportunities include: food prep, food safety, portion control, ingredient combinations and how to follow recipes. The most important element of this academy is organization, task-completion, and of course, a delicious family meal.
The GAP School has just received a grant from the Rocco Gerolmo Foundation for a weekly music class. Second, third and fourth grade students will be involved in music therapy, instrument play, and rhythm.
