About The Gap School

Mission

The GAP School 's mission is to be a whole family program that provides daily intensive interventions with educationa, cognitive, developmental and emotional training.

What is The GAP School?

The GAP School is a 501(c)(3) organization. It is a one year or multi-year intervention therapeutic full-day program for students ages 5 - 22. It serves students who have fallen through the cracks from traditional learning environments.

WE are not like other educational institutions. The GAP School is not an institution at all. It is a place where the soul of education exists. It is a healing place for students to rediscover that they can learn. They can reach a deeper connection with a teacher or another student. It is a place where the quality of a relationship resonates with meaning and involves feelings of belonging to a community. It is a place where students are truly seen. They are no longer invisible.

The GAP School has a class where silence is part of the curriculum so students can have a respite from the tyranny of the busyness of their academic day. Students reflect, enjoy stillness and then return to action again.
The GAP School helps students and families find meaning and purpose about big questions regarding learning, belonging, balancing, focusing, reconnecting and feeling smart!

The GAP School offers opportunities for joy and delight in learning and creating meaningful relationships. There are celebrations, gratitude and defining moments for students, staff and parents.

The GAP School offers a student the opportunity to be creative and nourish that spirit through new ideas, a work of art, a piece of writing, finalizing a project, watching a film, participating in a math class, etc.

The GAP School urges students to transcend themselves to go beyond their perceived limits. Students and families are encouraged to see beyond "disabilities" and see their abilities within themselves and others.

The GAP School deals with the rites of passages for our students - guiding children through to pre-teen years, adolescence and then teenage years. We provide tools for life's transitions, new starts and farewells.

The GAP School is most certainly about academics too, but it is more about healing, supporting and making sure the student, family and staff community stand together for success.

What do we envision a GAP School graduate to look like?

  • We want GAP School graduates to be able to access information and manage curriculum more easily.
  • We want our graduates to pursue their aspirations and enroll in challenging courses at other schools.
  • We want our GAP graduates to feel strongly that they are better off than they were before they started The GAP School.
  • We want them to be able to answer questions more intelligently and to be knowledgeable about their strengths and challenges.
  • We want them to have more tolerance and patience and be recognized as leaders. GAP graduates will be able to better regulate their own behaviors and to feel accepted and needed in a classroom community.
  • We hope they feel successful and will be able to ask for what they need.
  • We want The GAP School to be a transformative power so that you can continue on your roadmap of learning.
