Social Skills Curriculum

Social Skills Curriculum:

This classroom time is spent not having to perform academically which seems to be a big relief to our students who are trying so hard in their academic classes. The physical atmosphere is different. There is direct time for verbal and non-verbal processing (journaling).

Younger and Developmentally Delayed students enjoy the spotlight compliments, play therapy, fun and interactive team building exercises and they learn that they can start trusting. School becomes safe again! They also work on:

  • Sense of self and belonging
  • Conflict resolution
  • Identification and control of emotions
  • Owning your choices
  • Developing confidence and self-respect
  • Appropriate body language
  • Empathy for others
  • Verbal pragmatics
  • Making and keeping friendships
  • Maintaining family relationships
  • Identifying your role models

Older students are in a Social Action Class wherein they focus on:

They social action projects revolve around the spirit of empathy, heroes, leadership, choosing different paths, tolerance and finding their place in the world.

  • Embracing Our Differences
  • Food Drives for local outreach projects
  • Annual Friendship Luncheon
  • Peer mentoring within the school
  • Additional outreach programs within the community
